Tips for winter hiking on the Rothaarsteig

More fun hiking in the snow with good preparation

Hiking only works in spring, summer and fall? That's not true at all, because the Rothaarsteig, one of the most famous long-distance hiking trails in Germany, also reveals a special side in winter and can be used by hikers all year round for a break in nature. The winter experiences on the Rothaarsteig fascinate nature lovers and hikers alike. The snow-covered landscape, the clear air and the silence in the forests make these hikes in winter special experiences.

The Rothaarsteig stretches over 154 kilometers from Brilon in Sauerland to Dillenburg in Hessen. In the winter months, the path at higher altitudes is transformed into a snow-white winter landscape. The crunching snow under your hiking boots and the snow-covered trees create an atmosphere that invigorates the senses and touches the soul. Parts of the trail are also groomed as a cross-country ski trail in winter, so that winter sports enthusiasts can also use the Rothaarsteig for a break in the snow.

Good preparation pays off

Before embarking on a winter adventure on the Rothaarsteig, hikers should know that thorough preparation is advisable. Katharina Schwake-Drucks and Ilka Robke, experts from the Rothaarsteig Association, have a few tips to ensure that hiking in winter is a success and a lot of fun. "Wearing weatherproof clothing and sturdy footwear is particularly important to cope with the winter conditions," emphasizes Katharina Schwake-Drucks. Gaiters over your shoes can also help to prevent snow from getting into your shoes. You should also bear in mind that daylight hours are limited in winter and it is therefore advisable to plan your route thoroughly.

Valuable support from volunteer trail patrons

The Rothaarsteigverein is pleased that volunteer trail patrons ensure that the trails are fully marked and check the markings at least twice a year and repair them if necessary. "Without the support of the volunteer trail markers, the certifications would hardly be possible. I would therefore like to thank everyone who supports us in their free time," emphasizes Harald Knoche.

Allow more time for winter hikes

Hikes in winter and summer are not comparable, as walking is more strenuous in the snow. "Hikers are therefore slower and should plan more time for their tour," advises Ilka Robke, who points out that hikers may sometimes have to walk through deeper snow. The Rothaarsteig is not groomed along the entire route. She recommends taking hiking poles with you for a better grip. It is also important to always look upwards. If there is a lot of snow on the trees, the experts know that snow can occasionally break off. When hiking on the Rothaarsteig, it is important to stay on marked paths. Sensitive habitats and animals are in particular need of protection, especially in the winter months.

Stunning views along the trails

The Rothaarsteig is not only impressive in summer, but also offers particularly beautiful panoramas in winter. Popular vantage points, such as on the Niedersfelder Hochheide or the Kahler Asten, create incomparable visual experiences when the surroundings shine in glistening white. During the winter hike on the Rothaarsteig, there are always places to stop for refreshments to warm up and fortify yourself. Traditional inns offer regional specialties.

Get out of the daily grind and into a winter break

Winter hiking on the Rothaarsteig is a wonderful way to experience winter nature in its purest form. If you want to get away from it all and enjoy the winter tranquillity, the Rothaarsteig is the ideal setting.
