Contrary to what the name might suggest, the outdoor outfitter Tatonka is a German family business based in Dasing near Augsburg in Bavaria. Since 1993, the company, now in its second generation, has been manufacturing high-quality outdoor equipment under the Tatonka brand name, including rucksacks, bags, tents, travel accessories and clothing. Around 850 employees work for the company worldwide, 72 of whom are currently based in Dasing.
At its headquarters in Dasing, the company also operates an in-house repair service with an extensive stock of spare parts. From buckles to tent poles, every spare part is in stock here, and a team of three takes care of professional repairs - even for older Tatonka products.
Tatonka is one of very few companies in the outdoor industry that has maintained and operated its own production facility, Mountech Co. Ltd. in Vietnam, for over 30 years. From the very beginning, the Schechinger family's aim was to establish production according to European standards in order to be able to manufacture high-quality products. This naturally means training local employees accordingly and creating the framework conditions for close cooperation. Social responsibility towards employees in Germany and Vietnam is therefore not just a buzzword, but an integral part of the company's philosophy.
Production in Vietnam is carried out in accordance with high social and environmental standards, which are regularly confirmed by independent testing institutes. Since June 2011, the Tatonka production facility Mountech Co. Ltd. has been certified according to the globally recognized social standard SA8000. The special feature: As part of the "Open Factory" program, it is possible to visit the production facility while it is in operation. Once a week, the factory opens its doors to visitors, who are given an insight into the various production departments. This allows everyone to see the production conditions on site for themselves.
Incidentally, the idea for the brand name comes from the movie "Dances with Wolves", which is still popular today. Tatonka means bison in the Sioux language and it stands for nature, freedom, wilderness and strength. The bison is therefore the perfect trademark for an outdoor company.
