Our tour starts at the hiking parking lot on Austraße in Wahlbach.

(Not accessible this year (2024) due to a construction site. Please use the hiking portal in Buchhellertal. Access via Eicher Weg past the town hall).

From there, follow the markings to the edge of the forest. We walk clockwise along a forest path alongside the babbling Buchheller, which accompanies us at first. The path turns off at a right Winkeln and we now start the ascent to the Trödelsteine. In between, we come across contemporary witnesses of ore mining in the Buchheller valley: tunnel mouths and slag remains are relics from the mining era. The summit cross on the Trödelsteine greets us from afar. Once we reach the summit, we are rewarded with a view of the green Siegerland in good weather. Naturally, we sign the summit register. Following the path signposted with a white horizontal "R", we now walk through a new section that has been created due to the clearing of the spruce forest. Once we reach the top of the Nenkersberg, good visibility opens up a view that was previously unheard of. The Eifel and Sauerland are clearly visible! After letting our thoughts wander, we now start the descent. We briefly cross the border between Rhineland-Palatinate and North Rhine-Westphalia and follow narrow paths through mystical forests to the Wacholderheide in the Saukaute nature reserve. Shortly before the end of the tour, we can once again enjoy the view of the unique landscape between the Rothaargebirge and the Westerwald. We continue along narrow paths, which still require surefootedness, before arriving back in Wahlbach.

Information about the rescue signs on the Rothaarsteig

Most hiking trails run away from towns and settlements and every hiker has thought about what would happen if an emergency were to occur. How can I be found here? Where am I anyway? Can the emergency services reach me?

In an emergency, things have to happen quickly! That's why the Rothaarsteig is equipped with so-called rescue signs throughout. The green and white plaques attached to the posts of the signposts have a number that you must give when making an emergency call. This means that the emergency services know exactly where you are and valuable time can be saved.

Please bear in mind that there is currently an increased risk of forest fires due to the drought! Therefore, please observe the following instructions:

Observe the legal ban on smoking in the forest - it applies in spring, summer and fall, more precisely: from March 1 to October 31.

Observe the ban on open fires in the forest and within 100 meters of the forest.

Take glass out of the forest - the burning glass effect can cause forest fires.

When it is (too) late:

Extinguish small incipient fires if you can do so safely. Check the area carefully if necessary.

Report fires via "112".

Leave the danger zone by the shortest route.

The forest will thank you!

Author Tip

A combination of paths, forest passages, great views and rushing water. At the Buchheller, cozy sections invite you to take a break. Tip: make a note in the summit book. As the bark beetle plague has forced all the spruce stands along the trail to give way, please remember to bring adequate sun protection and drinks.
