A varied landscape and great views with forests and, in particular, idyllic meadow landscapes await hikers on the Gernsdorfer Höhentour around the Wilnsdorf district of the same name. The "Gernsdorfer Weidekämpe" nature reserve is a special feature due to the diversity of the cultivated landscape with different types of grassland. The term "Weidekämpe" refers to a large cattle pasture introduced in the 19th century on cleared Hauberg areas.

Due to different soil conditions and types of use, various biotope types and plant communities of open land developed, many of which are of great importance for nature conservation. These include mat-grass meadows, variegated mountain smooth oat meadows, wet meadows and small sedge swamps. Hedges, individual trees, swamp areas and springs provide a habitat for many rare animal and plant species and an attractive landscape for visitors. Notable species include tens of thousands of orchids. Rare meadow birds in the area include whinchats and meadow pipits, which, as ground-nesting birds, can only nest successfully where cultivation is extensive and adapted to the breeding season, as is the case here in the protected area.

Another special feature is that the Gernsdorf trail on the Rothaarsteig meets the Hessian "Dill-Bergtour" trail, meaning that the two Rothaarsteig trails can also be combined into one large hike or planned in two stages.

The Rothaarsteig trails are certified as "dream tours" by the German Hiking Association. They are particularly suitable for your day or half-day tour along the Trail of the Senses. All Rothaarsteig trails are marked with a white, horizontal R on a black background. Detailed tour descriptions of the trails can be found online at www.rothaarsteig.de/spuren. Our service hotline +49 2974/4994163 can be reached free of charge daily from 09.00 to 20.00.

Information

Directions

We start from the hiking parking lot at the start portal in Gernsdorf. After a short time, we turn right past the Drei Eichen country inn and leave the footpath. We continue uphill to the Asberg viewpoint. From there, we continue towards Helgersdorf before passing the Way of St. James and immediately leaving it in the direction of Gernsdorfer Weidekämpe. After crossing the L722, we walk along the Gernsdorfer Weidekämpe nature reserve, which is a special feature due to the great variety of grassland types. We continue in the direction of Gernsbacher Höhe. After approx. 6.5 km, we reach the Rothaarsteig. We walk parallel to the Rothaarsteig trail "Dill-Berg-Tour" for around 1 km before leaving the Rothaarsteig again. After another viewpoint, we reach the Jägersborn spring. After a short time, we reach the Obere Langenbachtal, the second nature reserve on our tour. We follow a path back towards Gernsdorf. After around 13 km, we return to our starting point along the Bichelbach stream.

Equipment

The Rothaarsteig leads along numerous natural paths away from agricultural and forestry roads. Weatherproof clothing and sturdy shoes are therefore a must for every hike. We want you to experience the "Path of the Senses" not only "dry" but also with "good" feet.

Rainwear

If changeable weather is forecast for your tour on the Rothaarsteig, remember to pack a light rain jacket or rain poncho. They take up virtually no space in your rucksack and also keep out the unpleasant wind. Gaiters that protect your trouser legs from dirt and moisture are also practical.

First aid kit

To ensure that you can enjoy your hiking tour on the Rothaarsteig to the full, a first aid kit should be in your rucksack for safety's sake. After all, nothing is more annoying than not being able to immediately treat a blister on your foot or minor injuries.

Food and drink

On some stages, especially between Lahnhof and Dillenburg, there are unfortunately no refreshment stops along the way. Remember to pack food and drink, especially here. Sufficient drinks are especially important in summer.

Safty guidelines

Note on the route

The Gernsdorf Rothaarsteig trail meets the Hessian Rothaarsteig trail "Dill-Bergtour" on the Rothaarsteig. All Rothaarsteig trails are marked with a white, horizontal R on a black background. Please pay attention to the additional signs so as not to miss your trail branch!

Information about the rescue signs on the Rothaarsteig

Most hiking trails run away from towns and settlements and every hiker has thought about what would happen if an emergency were to occur. How can I be found here? Where am I anyway? Can the emergency services reach me?

In an emergency, things have to happen quickly! That's why the Rothaarsteig is equipped with so-called rescue signs throughout. The green and white plaques attached to the posts of the signposts have a number that you must give when making an emergency call. This way, the emergency services know exactly where you are and valuable time can be saved.

Note on the increased risk of forest fires

Please bear in mind that there is currently an increased risk of forest firesdue to the drought! Therefore, please observe the following instructions:

  • Observe the legal ban on smoking in the forest - it applies in spring, summer and fall, more precisely: from March 1 to October 31.

  • Observe the ban on open fires in the forest and within 100 meters of the forest.

  • Take glass out of the forest - the burning glass effect can cause forest fires.

When it is (too) late:

  • Extinguish small incipient fires if you can do so safely. Check the area carefully if necessary.

  • Report fires via "112".

  • Leave the danger zone by the shortest route.

The forest will thank you!
