Tips for winter hiking on the Rothaarsteig
The Rothaarsteig can be hiked at any time of year. Compared to other trails, all passages are also accessible in winter.
- When planning your tour, bear in mind that hiking in winter is more strenuous in the snow and you will therefore walk more slowly. So plan more time.
- Also remember that it gets dark earlier in winter!
- The Rothaarsteig is not continuously groomed. Due to snow drifts, you may have to hike through deeper snow in places.
- If it has snowed a lot and the snow is lying on the trees, there may be occasional snow breakage. Be aware of this and look up from time to time.
- Various sections of the Rothaarsteig are also groomed as cross-country ski trails when the snow conditions are suitable. Please do not step on the groomed trail, otherwise it will break.
- If necessary, take hiking poles with you for better grip. Gaiters over your shoes also ensure that the snow does not get into your shoes.
- To warm yourself up in between, we recommend packing a thermos flask with warm tea in your rucksack.
